What Speedway Offers Residents

Small Town Living Within a Big City

If you’re looking for big-city living with the feel of a small town, Speedway is the place to be. Combining all the best Indianapolis has to offer in dining, shopping, and culture with a comfortable suburban feel, Speedway gives you the best of both worlds.

At Wilshaw Apartments, we appreciate the history and evolution of this exciting community. Read on to learn more about this charming town!

Speedway History

Speedway came into being in 1912 as “Speedway City,” a suburb of Indianapolis. Designed by the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), Speedway was intended to be a community where local automotive industry workers could live. IMS co-founder James Allison had a machine shop on Main Street, and during WWI, Allison’s company pivoted to producing aircraft engines for the war, creating numerous jobs for local workers. Speedway was incorporated as a town in 1926 and continued to grow as a hub of aircraft engine and automotive manufacturing.

Speedway Today

Currently home to about 12,000 residents working in a variety of professions, Speedway has a lot to offer beyond just the IMS. Known for a highly rated public school system, Speedway also has its own public library, arts council, and a parks department, featuring two community parks and athletic and recreation facilities. Many Speedway residents work for local manufacturers, but a lot of people here work in downtown Indianapolis, which is just a few miles away.

What to Do in Speedway

When it comes to attractions in Speedway, there’s one obvious standout. But while the IMS itself is understandably one of the biggest draws in Speedway, it’s not the only attraction in town. In the thriving downtown area, many local shops and restaurants are offering curbside pickup and other safe ways to support local small businesses. If you’re in the mood for some outdoor time, take a stroll through the walking paths at Meadowood Park or Leonard Park to enjoy the laid-back, small-town feel.
