Switching Out Seasonal Clothes

Change Your Wardrobe With the Change in Seasons

As autumn settles in, bringing with it changing leaves, shorter days, and cool, crisp weather, it’s time to pack away your shorts, sandals, and other summer clothes to make room for cozy sweaters, warm outerwear, and everything you need as the temperature drops. And with Wilshaw’s roomy walk-in closets, you’ve got the space to really get organized!

Take a look at these tips for making the seasonal switch to your wardrobe.

Curate While Sorting

Switching out your seasonal wardrobe is a perfect time to pare down. As you begin to pack things up, decide if each item is something you want to carry over to next year. If you find that you have items you’re putting away that you didn’t wear at all this past season, perhaps it’s time to give them a new home! Set aside a space or container for donations, and as you sort, let go of things that are just taking up space in your closet or dresser.

Don’t Forget Accessories

Shoes, bags, and other accessories can and should be stored for the off-season as well. Come fall, there’s little reason to have easy access to your sandals or a floppy beach hat, when you’ll more likely be reaching for boots and other cold-weather accessories.

Choose Your Colors

Keep in mind that some colors can look out-of-place during certain seasons. A pink gingham shirt or a bright yellow handbag can be stowed until spring.

Prepare Items for Storage

When storing clothes for a season, you want to be sure that everything will be in the same condition when you unpack it next year. Make sure that all items are freshly laundered before storing them. For accessories and other items that can’t be washed, clean them according to label instructions before storage.

A few storage tips:

  • Find the best place for storage. Your closet might be the most logical place to stash your warm-weather wardrobe, but if you’d prefer not to look at plastic bins all winter, under-bed storage bins might be a better solution.

  • Keep things dry. Moisture is always a concern with clothing storage, as it can degrade or discolor fabrics. Use silica gel packs to absorb excess humidity, and place acid-free tissue paper in between items to improve air circulation.
