Food Photography Tips

How to Make Your Food Look Fab in Photos

This year has motivated a lot of people to work on their culinary skills, whether that’s making sourdough bread or cooking up an exotic and colorful meal. So the natural next step would be photographing those creations and sharing them on Instagram. Unfortunately, even the tastiest meal sometimes looks unappetizing in photos.

You don’t need an expensive camera for amateur food photography – a smartphone works fine for this purpose. Good lighting is essential, though, and you need enough space to set up a “scene.” At Wilshaw, our large kitchen islands give aspiring food photographers all the room they need to capture amazing photos. With that work area and the following tips, you can start snapping food photos like a pro!

Getting the Lighting Right

When photographing food, you want to try to eliminate shadows, so you may need a few lamps nearby to get that perfect shot. For small objects, make a simple lightbox for 360-degree lighting.

When possible, use natural lighting. Put a small bistro table or pedestal on your balcony that you can use to stage photos.

Choose a Background

Experiment with different backgrounds and textures. A colorful dessert may look best against a clean white background, whereas you may want more texture to set off a simple plate of pasta. Think creatively about staging your photo – while you would never serve your guests a meal on the floor, your gray plank flooring might be a perfect backdrop for a food photo!

Consider ‘Cheating’

Food photographers use several “tricks” to make food and drinks look more appealing, and one of them is to use items that aren’t edible, like acrylic “ice cubes” that look real, or a bowl of fake fruit in the background. Not everything in your photo needs to be homemade.

If your photo doesn’t come out quite right, use your phone’s photo editing capabilities or Instagram filters to achieve the effect you want.
